  • Projects WILD, Learning Tree, and WET Project WILD, Project WILD Aquatic, Project Learning Tree and Project Wet are four national award-winning environmental education programs the Illinois Department of Natural Resources sponsors.
  • “Wild Illinois History” has new, improved features for 2007!
With a mouse click, students can journey back to the earliest days of the Illinois Territory when voyageurs and Native Americans hunted and traveled the prairies, forests and rivers. “Wild Illinois History” helps students in grades 3 through 5 focus on early exploration, geography and wildlife issues.

If you have used the site in the past, you'll find new features and lesson plans that make it a great supplement to Illinois history exploration. It contains streaming video, free photos, classroom materials and grant information.

Students can learn how wildlife helped Native Americans and early settlers survive; they can see how wildlife is a part of our lives today. A fictional French trapper from the 18th Century Illinois Territory leads students on the trip. Brief story-telling slideshows are mixed with fun, interactive activities. Lesson plans and activities are correlated to Illinois Learning Standards.

2008 Poster, Poetry and Prose Contest
Fifth and sixth grade writers and artists from around Illinois are invited to compete in this year's Poster, Poetry and Prose Contest sponsored by the Illinois EPA. The contest, which coincides with the environmental education packet, "Environmental Pathways - Youth Investigating Pollution Issues in Illinois," gives students an opportunity to express and share, on a deeper and more personal level, what they have learned about the importance of protecting our air, land and water. This free teacher's guide meets the criteria of the North American Association for Environmental Education's, Environmental Education Materials: Guidelines for Excellence, and is correlated with the Illinois Leaning Standards.
This year's study focuses on the importance of clean air and what individuals can do to help prevent global warming with "Global Warming - What Can We Do?" as the event's theme. Each school can enter up to twelve (six posters and six written) works. Entries must be postmarked and sent in to the Illinois EPA by February 8, 2008. More information and contest materials can be found on the Illinois EPA's web page or by calling 217-558-7198.
